Established in 1995, Red Ryder Entertainment looks after North
American bookings for the roster of artists listed on this site,
and has coordinated tours in Asia, Europe, Central and South
America, Australia and New Zealand as well. Twice nominated
for Boutique Booking Agency of the Year by Pollstar Magazine, the
Red Ryder team includes myself (Erik Selz, founder and agent), Matt
Spinner (agent) and Ethan Berlin (agent).
Red Ryder is driven first and foremost by a love of music, and the satisfaction that comes from helping our artists build and sustain their careers.
Representing musicians whose art speaks to us, and assuming responsibility for spreading their work to a wider and deeper audience, is both humbling and thrilling. As revenue from recorded music withers, and the industry turns its collective gaze to touring, we adhere to the playbook which has and will continue to breed success: productive, effective sets of tourdates, plum support slots, A-list festivals, and the restraint to say "it's time for a break".
It takes a lot to move the needle these days, and even more to stay on the collective radar. A robust label staff is a fringe benefit, not the guarantee it once was. Absent traditional label structures, and the fifteen, or thirty, or fifty person staffs they would carry, the nucleus of manager, agent and publicist has become even more vital. We value, welcome and in certain cases insist that a potential Red Ryder client maintain this dedicated, competent core team.
The promoters with whom we work: they buy, we sell, and without each other, the house of cards tumbles. We ask of them the same mix of creativity, patience and reliability that we demand of ourselves. Behind Andrew Bird's December 2009 "Gezelligheid" concerts were a half-dozen site visits to local churches and cathedrals in each market. This was roll-up-the-sleeves work which required anything but a textbook talent buyer. We take pride in our promoter partners, who enable Red Ryder to push the envelope, and on occasion, redefine the traditional concert venue.
Ticketing: much has been made of soaring surcharges attached to base ticket prices, which, on a club-level show priced below $15, can nearly double the cost of one admission. The no-longer-hidden secret is that this surcharge is sliced and diced every which way, with pieces accruing to the promoter, the venue, the ticketing company, or some combination thereof. Red Ryder clients enjoy complete transparency on this front, are equipped with extensive data regarding the different ways to procure tickets for their shows, and the surcharges associated with each.
We maintain a compact roster, superserve our clients, and are easy to reach. External agency relationships cover the spectrum from boutique to mainstream booking houses, as evidenced by the lengthy set of creative tour packages we have constructed over the years.
The header on faxes from Jack Reich (Lupo's, Providence RI) used to read COMMUNICATION = POWER. We don't sugar-coat, and won't pledge to deliver the moon. We will turn over every stone, and surprise with our thoroughness, and innovation.
Each year, there are a handful of artists who ascend from the bedroom to 5000-seat halls - career arcs which fascinate, inspire, and remind me of the promise which lies within so many of our clients at Red Ryder.
Thanks so much for your interest in our roster, whom we are very proud to represent.
